Dovetail beginner

I know everyone makes this mistake, and now I’ve done it too.

I guess this box will be smaller than intended.

What if I told you that none of us have ever done anything like that…
you’d believe me… right???

Maybe you could cut a set of new sides and another of new ends and just make 2 boxes?

Excellent idea, @HerbStoops. But I already cut my two side pieces down. I’ll never make this mistake again, of course, but the next time I’ll keep in mind that I could just make 2 boxes like you suggest.

Luckily the original pieces were larger than strictly necessary, so the box will just be less oversized.

Yes, brain slippage has been known to happen when dovetailing a bunch of drawers…

I had another problem with the same set of drawers with the bit slipping in the collet. No option but to cut away the bad joint, and splice on (cross-grain tongue & groove) some new material and do it over

That was a good fix too.

I wish I was setting you up. This is all natural talent.

I think I’m just going to make backwards dovetails on the other side, and have one corner not be proper dovetails. Maybe I’ll put a skewer in from the top to hold it together, but I bet glue is good enough for this box. It doesn’t need a lot of strength.

What if I told you that none of us have ever done anything like that… Either…

I didn’t laff at you Tim…
it was the BTDT thing…
a week later and things still weren’t right…
kinda like hitting bottom and ya just keep digging…
have you got to different length sides yet???
is it that the sockets are not deep enough or is it the tails aren’t long enough…

I think it is sockets one end ,tails the other, should have been sides ,tails both ends, box ends get sockets each end. at least that is the way It most of the time. Can be just the opposite too. Similar to box joints ,only dovetails…

No, but I’ll sure to update you all when I do.

I made a box that was dovetailed all around but each corner was

not like the adjacent one.
