Hat tree...cactus

This is a cactus shaped hat tree I made for Family Handyman’s One-Sheet Plywood Challenge.

I borrowed most of the corded tools from our local tool library, hence the tribute in the photo above :billed_cap:

I liked the pre-stain look but eventually decided to stain it green.

Port Townsend School of Woodworking was generously offering free photo shoot sessions. I traveled close to 2 hours (one way) with Señor Saguaro on my truck, standing up.

I saw the call at the beginning of June and poured most of my free time into this to meet the end of June deadline, then when I was trying to submit, the form was down! I’m assuming people like me rushed to the website at the same time and crushed it. I sent my photos to their email and don’t know if that counted as an entry or not, but it was a fun project either way, and I’m looking forward to seeing what other people came up with. The contest had been open since March, I think. There must be fancy joints or something really cool. I’ll follow up when I see their photos.

I tried to keep track of my cuts (the list was required) in Excel…it looks insane :joy:

Wow. This must deserve some kind of abuse-of-plywood award, in the best possible way. Love the quirky look of the end result.

How did you round the outside? Did you cut wedges?

Thank you! Possibly a largest parts count?

The ends of the strips are trapezoids (of course I cut a parallelogram for the first one…scrap), so they naturally formed round-ish shape. An orbital sander and a Dremel helped shaping too.

Wonderful! Very creative. I would never have guessed it was all plywood!
