Jewelry Box Drawers

Hi there, first-time poster in this forum. I’m a Seattle-based woodworker who enjoys small and large projects alike, and I trend towards the craftsman style.

I’m noodling a jewelry box for my next project and I was hoping to see if folks have ideas on how to do the drawers. I want the drawers to pull out “all the way” to access the back edge of the drawer - I don’t like it when you pull out a drawer but can only access 3/4 or so of the drawer, otherwise it will come off its slides and fall out completely.

Is there a general rule of thumb for how much (what proportion?) drawer/slider needs to stay inside the box so it doesn’t fall out or droop too much, and you can still access the whole drawer? I suppose the other alternative is to just use metal drawer sliders made for this kind of thing, but I want to explore wood options first.

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

I need to learn to read better…

Sorry…

IIRC Fine Woodworking did an article on shop made full extension wooden drawer slides and offered a free PDF download….

Edited to add link…

Well, here’s something I made a long time ago:

They’re just boxes in a carcass, no slides or anything.

Sticking out 7" feels like the limit where it’s good. The box is tilting down a little.

The overall depth of the box is 8.5".

Hopefully that gives you some idea.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

@Stick486, great find on that pdf! Seems like a clever design that I’ll have to try.

@rtwfroody, thanks for the field measurements on your handiwork!
