I was digging thru the Koa woodpile doing a little prospecting. Ran this piece thru the drum sander to clean it up. It didn’t look like much (1st pic) until I hit it with some mineral spirits to check the grain (2nd pic), I will add a couple more shots of some other pieces I found in another post
William, that is some seriously beautiful wood…
That’s gorgeous. What do you think you’ll do with it? I always think it’s hard to make a pleasing object out of wood whose grain is a bit too attention grabbing.
To be honest I am a bit scared to play with it. Don’t want to screw it up.
First, I need to decide what it looks like. One opinion was a mushroom cloud, the other was a large tree. Think I will go with tree.
All the Koa comes to me in approx 1 3/8 thick pieces, so my thought is to split it and book match it. I thought that just a simple window frame border would be best to just make a holiday tray. It would end up at about 9 x 16, which is handy and not cumbersome for use or display.
I would gladly take any suggestions or creative ideas.
