Wood identification service

I had a mantel that came from an old house. I’d been curious what kind of wood it is, and at the last meeting, a gentleman told me there is a place I can send a sample to get identified.

The Center for Wood Anatomy Research - Wood Identification Public Service

My result came back quickly. It was Tsuga sp. (hemlock). Opening the email was exciting.

That is fantastic Yuka. I had no idea that Service existed. I looked at the website and that is quite a resource. Thanks for posting it and informing the group.

Hi Hal,

Of course! Isn’t it a wonderful resource? I think the person who taught me about this service is named Steve, who came to the meeting after many years absent. I’m glad I asked! (and thanks to Tim for reminding me I had that wood chunk. I was about to leave, having completely forgotten about it )
